Trang fanpage của LION Championship mới đây đã đăng tải clip Nguyễn Trần Duy Nhất trả đai vô địch mà anh giành năm 2022. "Độc cô cầu bại" phát biểu trong clip: "Trong năm 2022, Nhất có may mắn giành đai vô địch hạng cân 60 kg ở LION Championship 2022. Sự ủng hộ của khán giả đã tạo động lực để Nhất giành đai vô địch".

"Thực sự MMA không phải chuyên môn của Nhất, chuyên môn của mình là Muay Thái, mình tập thêm BJJ, địa chiến để tham gia LION Championship, tạo động lực cho các bạn trẻ. Mình cũng muốn phát triển phong trào MMA tại Việt Nam. Giờ đây khi chứng kiến LION Championship phát triển, mình nghĩ nên nhường chiếc đai này lại cho các võ sĩ khác. Mình sẽ tiếp tục cống hiến với bộ môn Muay Thái".
Được biết, lý do võ sĩ gốc Bình Định trả đai vô địch MMA Lion Championship 2022 là do bận công việc riêng, không có thời gian tham gia trận bảo vệ đai. "Năm nay, tôi bận công tác huấn luyện, thường xuyên dẫn các bạn trẻ đi đánh giải nên không có thời gian tham gia thi đấu Lion Championship".
Tại trận chung kết Lion Championship 2022 hạng 60 kg nam, Nguyễn Trần Duy Nhất đối đầu với võ sĩ Nguyễn Tiến Long. Sau 5 hiệp đấu căng thẳng, anh được ba trong tài chấm điểm cao hơn và giành đai vô địch. Võ sĩ sinh năm 1989 nhận thưởng 200 triệu đồng cho danh hiệu này.

Việc Nguyễn Trần Duy Nhất trả đai và trước đó là trường hợp của Trần Quang Lộc đã để lại nhiều tiếc nuối trong lòng người hâm mộ võ thuật Việt Nam. Khi giải đấu được khởi tranh vào năm ngoái, Nguyễn Trần Duy Nhất chính là cái tên được mọi người quan tâm nhất khi anh đã khẳng định được vị thế của mình trong giới võ thuật nước nhà cũng như vươn tầm quốc tế tại ONE Championship. Có thể nói, nhờ có anh mà giải đấu MMA đầu tiên của Việt Nam LION Championship mới có thể thu hút được lượng lớn người theo dõi ban đầu.
Với việc Nguyễn Trần Duy Nhất rút lui, chiếc đai hạng 60 kg nam Lion Championship hiện khuyết chủ. Võ sĩ người Brazil Robson Oliveira và Trần Ngọc Lượng được cho là ứng viên nặng ký cho danh hiệu này khi liên tục có những chiến thắng ấn tượng ở mùa giải năm nay.
Hiện tại, Nguyễn Trần Duy Nhất đang chuẩn bị tham gia một số giải Muay Thái chuyên nghiệp. Trong đó, các khán giả vẫn kì vọng anh sẽ trở lại tranh tài ở hạng ruồi (61,2kg) sàn Muay Thái của ONE Championship - nơi anh đang sở hữu 2 trận thắng knockout. Trước đó, Nguyễn Trần Duy Nhất cũng đã xác nhận việc tái xuất tại ONE trong năm 2024.
